Rounding 3rd on April

Good Afternoon,

As we close out another week in 4th grade, I just want to take a moment to say how proud I am of the hard work and growth I’ve seen from the students. It’s been a great week, and I’m excited for what’s coming up as we head into the final week of April. There’s still plenty of learning and growth ahead, and I’m looking forward to seeing how much more we can accomplish together!

Week in Review:

Leader in Me: This week we focused on I messages as a whole school to equip our leaders with a way to solve everyday conflicts that may come up. It was great to see all the students practice this and use this in the classrooms and their Husky Packs as we add another strategy to their social emotional learning to being great leaders!

Writing: This week in writing, our 4th grade authors kicked off an exciting new unit on graphic novels. We began by exploring what makes graphic novels special to spark enthusiasm for the genre. Students then used doodling to generate a variety of story ideas and learned how to plan their narratives using a strategy called bookmapping. We wrapped up the week by practicing thumbnailing and scripting, helping writers highlight the most important moments on each page.

Math: This week in math, our 4th grade mathematicians focused on strengthening their division skills. They played “Lowest Remainder Wins” to explore dividing money and develop new generalizations. Students also learned and practiced additional division strategies to expand their understanding. To wrap up the week, they reviewed everything covered in Unit 6 and completed a post-assessment to reflect on and demonstrate their learning.

Reading: This week in reading, our 4th grade historians began exploring the genre of historical fiction. We started by learning how to read analytically at the beginning of a book, paying close attention to details that help us understand the story. Students practiced monitoring for sense, working on fitting the pieces of the plot together as they read so they can be prepared to contribute in their book clubs!

Content: This week in social studies, our 4th grade students began a new unit exploring the concept of economic choices. They learned that because people have unlimited wants but limited resources, we must constantly make decisions that impact our lives. The students started by envisioning personal and community goals, which will guide their investigation into how economic choices affect us now and in the future. They also introduced the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) to create investigation questions that will shape their exploration of economics. This unit is helping them develop financial literacy and a deeper understanding of how interdependence and economic relationships work.
