Last Full Week of School in October? Already?
Good Afternoon,
What a fun filled week of learning here in 4th Grade at NDLC. The students are doing such an amazing job, and I can say so many positives about every single one of them. This week we talked about the importance of reaching for your full potential daily, and making every day count; I think this message resonated with many as we discussed what they can accomplish if they if they won't settle for anything less than their best. I am looking forward to continue to build on all they have have accomplished so far as we head into a short week next week!
Week in Review:
Leader in Me: This week, we focused on self-regulation strategies to use when we feel strong emotions. Invite your learner to teach you calming strategies. Practice them together!
Writing: Writers launched their new unit, writing essays and arguments. They began by choosing issues of personal importance, and then had structured brainstorming to write long on their issues. They wrote entries that are longer and developed that included details to showcase their ideas.
Math: Mathematicians began the week reviewing the relationship between dimensions and area. They used their base ten area pieces as referents for centimeters and decimeters as they created rectangular arrays, identified and labeled dimensions, and found areas. Students then considered the limitations of modeling multiplication with base ten area and linear pieces and learned to use base ten grid paper to sketch rectangular arrays. Lastly, we worded with models on how to fill in an array by sketching labeled rectangles instead of using base ten grid paper to solve multi digit multiplication problems.
Reading: Readers launched a new reading unit focusing on nonfiction reading. They set new goals that they want to focus on to begin the unit, and then discussed how to monitor for understanding, questioning the text as they read. We talked on how to determine the central ideas in texts, how to keep their reading volume up, and lastly using multiple 'lenses' when reading narrative nonfiction.
Content: Students continued to practice their independent researching and summarizing skills while investigating a natural resource and its connections to humans and the environment. Their research was used to develop a claim that demonstrates understanding of how to use these natural resources responsibly. They advocated for the responsible use of a particular natural resource. They designed a Mini-Poster that promoted their position with evidence gathered during their research.
- Thank you to a parent who shared this great resource which can benefit your 4th grader and family! Every fourth grader in the US is eligible to receive a free pass for their family to visit America’s natural wonders and historic sites, which accesses hundreds of parks, lands and waters for an entire year! Visit everykidoutdoors.gov/rules.htm for more information and to get your pass!
