Full Steam Ahead into October

Good Afternoon,

The writing celebration yesterday went amazing, and I am so appreciative of all the people we had come into celebrate the writers. I will speak on behalf of all of them if they haven't already, and say thank you! It's such an important piece to what make us who we are here at NDLC is our connections between school and home, and that was on full display yesterday. It was another busy week of learning and growing in fourth grade, and as the days go by the class is settling into expectations and reaching for their full potential every single day.

Week in Review:

Leader in Me: We learned to identify the intensity of our emotions and of those around us. As a family, take turns sharing examples of when you have felt intense emotions and how you chose or could have chosen a helpful response.

Writing: Writers prepared all week to make their writing as special as it could be for their writing celebration. It was a fun week seeing themselves light up when describing themselves as authors getting ready for publication whether that be in their all about the author pages, or working hard to meet deadlines. Thanks to everyone who helped make the writing celebration so special. It's moments like that where I feel very proud to be a part of the community at NDLC because it is special.

Math:  Mathematicians began the week reviewing the meanings of mass and weight, and definitions for volume and capacity. Then they compared sizes of containers and brainstormed real life objects for each size. Students explored some interesting relationships between liters, milliliters, and cubic centimeters and converted between liters and milliliters. Lastly, students determined the area of each base ten area piece in square centimeters and discussed the idea that the area of each piece represents its place value. They also built models of the base ten area pieces through 10,000 to display in the classroom as the Great Wall of Base Ten

Reading: Readers put their reading skills on display in their post assessments for our first unit of interpreting characters. It was great to see the growth by many as it is a great springboard to the school year that will take on so much growth as a reader! They were able to enjoy their class read aloud in movie form to end the week, Tiger Rising.

Content: Students examined types and uses of renewable and nonrenewable natural resources. They considered the concept of an ecological footprint as they are gearing up to write an evidence-based claim related to responsible resource use.

  • Thank you to a parent who shared this great resource which can benefit your 4th grader and family! Every fourth grader in the US is eligible to receive a free pass for their family to visit America’s natural wonders and historic sites, which accesses hundreds of parks, lands and waters for an entire year! Visit everykidoutdoors.gov/rules.htm for more information and to get your pass!

A Look Ahead:

  • October 21st Simple Simon Orders due
  • October 24th & 25th - No School
  • TENTATIVE DATE FOR MADISON FIELD TRIP
    • Thursday, December 19th.
    • We try to accommodate all chaperones as we know this is a popular field trip for all. I am finalizing details on my end, and when it is finished I will send an official announcement, but I wanted you to be able to get a hold on a date.

That's all for this week!

Have a great weekend!
