Halfway through September
Good Afternoon,
This week may have felt long for some of the students because of beginning of the year i-Ready taking up parts of two days, but they persevered to make it through the week. We have almost all of our beginning of the year testing done, and can start to settle into our schedule routinely going forward. The beginning of the year can feel busy with all the 'new' that is happening, but it has been great getting to know all of the students a little bit better every single day. I look forward to continuing to build a classroom culture that all students can thrive in, and be their best versions of themselves!
Week in Review:
Leader in Me: We are excited to share the 7 Habits with our family members and caregivers. Try this activity as a family: Identify people in your family or community who are courageous. As we learn about the habits, We invite you to use the Habit Homework Menu and challenge your family to engage in the activities!
Writing: Writers began the week looking at checklists and benchmarks which helps us when setting goals and revising writing. Then we looked at a couple of strategies when drafting to show what’s happening inside of you being the main character of your story and also bringing characters to life with dialogue.
Math: Mathematicians worked through problems to showcase models for division using a number line, ratio table, tile array, or area model. Then we had our first math forum on multiplication and division which is a time for all mathematicians to share out in a whole class setting what models and strategies they used when solving problems to give us an opportunity to collaborate and learn from each other. Students ended the week putting together posters once they found all the factors of numbers from 1 to 36.
Reading: Readers got their pre assessments back which we then analyzed responses to help us level up our thinking and jotting while reading. We discussed how the room is setup and routines are in place to help cultivate a culture of reading in our classroom. Readers ended the week looking at ways of retelling and synthesizing to cement comprehension in their reading.
Content: We created identity maps to showcase all the different ways that make us special, and we will continue to add to those as we go throughout the year. We reinforced school wide expectations in all areas: recess, lunch, hallway, bathroom. Students got their class jobs and those are up and running this week!
